First week in the books

As the first week of preseason draws to a close, Team Portugal U8 is beginning to take shape. Head coach Dave Kavanaugh offered his early assessments:

"It's early, and it's clear we have a lot of work to do, but there are some positive signs. Tuesday's preseason meeting was a chance for us to get together with parents and kids, and it's encouraging to see some good support from the parents. That will be integral as we go forward this season. On Thursday, we saw the kids begin to work through some drills on basic skills. Some have a year or two of soccer experience; others are new to the sport. All of us -- players and coaches -- will be working to get better, one practice at a time. We do have some very cool kids, and they are getting along quite well, which is something you don't always see from teams, especially on their first day together. That in itself is encouraging. As long as we continue to jell as a group and come to practice (and games) focused and committed to improving, we are on the right track. Meanwhile, it's good to see the kids having fun out here. We're doing a few things this fall that will hopefully contribute to that atmosphere, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to coach this bunch."
